No current independent jail operation at the Ocracoke address has been verified. The evidence is a state inspection letter reproduced in a May 2021 Hyde County agenda packet. That letter was addressed to “Hyde County Jail” at 1140 Irvin Garrish Highway, Ocracoke. It proves a historical inspection reference, not that the site now books people, houses them overnight, maintains a release desk, or operates as a separate jail.

The current 2024 statewide detention facility directory lists Hyde County Jail at the Public Safety Center in Swan Quarter. It does not list a second Hyde County jail on Ocracoke. The omission does not explain every possible law-enforcement use of the historical site, but it bars a claim that Ocracoke has a verified current independent jail or public release point.

This careful label matters. A facility directory, old letter, booking record, and transport log each answer different questions. Only the current custodian can identify where the person was booked, held, and released or transferred.

Where Ocracoke Custody Records Go

An arrest on Ocracoke does not establish an Ocracoke release. The person may be processed locally for a limited stage, transported to Swan Quarter, moved to another county, brought before a magistrate, released under court authority, or transferred to another custodian. Dates should stay attached to each source. Later confirmation from the Sheriff or a newer state directory could change the operating-status conclusion, but it should not be assumed in advance.

Ocracoke Release Geography Matters

Hyde County’s mainland and island geography makes facility identification unusually important. Hyde Release Systems Differ

Hyde’s current listed county jail and its state prison are separate systems. The Swan Quarter jail has a rated capacity of 32 and is operated by the Sheriff. Hyde Correctional Institution has an official capacity of 648 and is operated by NCDAC. The prison opened as medium custody in 1997, added a minimum unit in 1999, and became wholly minimum custody in 2019.

This scale and history matter to an Ocracoke inquiry because a search result containing “Hyde” may point to a Sheriff booking, a state-prison sentence, or Hyde as an NCDAC release county. It does not validate an independent current Ocracoke jail. Match the operator and facility before choosing a release-record route.

Source-level wording protects accuracy. “The 2021 letter used this address” states the historical fact. “The current directory lists Swan Quarter only” states the present directory evidence.
